Wife Abuse: Evangelical Feminists' Useful Lie

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
It's long been a tactic of evangelical feminists to lay the abuse of women at the door of patriarchy. But do the facts support this contention, and what is the true nature of abuse in the western world today? Read how the reality of husband abuse is conveniently sidestepped by those who hate God's order, and how to blame patriarchy for wife abuse is in fact to slander God Himself.
If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31,32

It's no accident the move to legitimate sodomy experienced its greatest success precisely during the years when AIDS decimated the homosexualist community. From Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity, to legislators in Washington D.

Covenant Children and the Emasculation of the Church, with a Tribute to My Father...

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
How is our failure to rear godly children connected to our failure to appropriate God's promises? And how does neglecting to discipline our children produce an emasculated church? This compelling article explains why discipline must start with our children long before they show signs of saving faith.

…Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed… For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him. (Genesis 18:18,19)

Marriage Ceremonies that Defend the Faith

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
What is the purpose of a marriage ceremony? How have these changed over time as society has wandered from Biblical principles? And how do we bring them back into conformity with Scripture?

Note: The following essay is the fruit of research I've done on the history of marriage ceremonies, specifically their liturgy. I've asked the question "How can my work as a pastor officiating at marriage ceremonies be used by God to strengthen the commitment within our congregation to God's Truth in the area of the meaning and purpose of sexuality?"

Women and the Order of Creation...

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
How far does God's order of sexuality extend? If women can't be pastors or leaders of their homes, can they be judges, police officers, national leaders? Evangelicals who accept the authority of Scripture still often find themselves limiting the boundaries of God's order to the church and the home. But is this Biblical, and how do we know? This timely article shows the need for all of us to embrace a larger understanding of the good of God's decrees for sexuality.

Woman was not made for this, O man, to be prostituted as common. O ye subverters of all decency, who use men, as if they were women, and lead out women to war, as if they were men! This is the work of the devil, to subvert and confound all things, to overleap the boundaries that have been appointed from the beginning, and remove those which God has set to nature. For God assigned to woman the care of the house only, to man the conduct of public affairs. But you reduce the head to the feet, and raise the feet to the head. You suffer women to bear arms, and are not ashamed.

Wooing as Warfare

Author:
David Bayly
Description:
We're inclined to think of the process of wooing, dating, and courtship as a peaceful, maybe even sentimental one. But in fact the dance between man and woman is one of life's profoundest mysteries, and it often involves as much warfare as it does peace. This thought-provoking article explains how God has designed wooing to work, and how a godly man battles honorably to win his wife just as Christ did to win His Church.

Three things are too wonderful for me;
four I do not understand:
the way of an eagle in the sky,
the way of a serpent on a rock,
the way of a ship on the high seas,
and the way of a man with a virgin.

Sodomy and Pastoral Care

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
Although this article was written over twenty years ago, it still remains an accurate discussion of the many issues surrounding the debate over sodomy in the evangelical world, the mainline world and Western culture.

Note: This article was written about fourteen years ago, back when I was a pastor in the mainline Presbyterian Church (USA). Thirteen years ago, the session (elders) of the two churches I served as pastor decided to leave the PC(USA) and enter the PCA, a conservative and biblical denomination. Two of the most significant reasons for the sessions' decision were the PC(USA)'s approval of abortion and it's refusal to say God's no to sexual sin in general, but particularly sodomy.

Does the Bible Affirm Open Theism?

Author:
John M. Frame
Description:
In this brief but useful article, Dr. Frame counters the contention that God does not know the future. Rather, he explains that God's knowledge is absolute and infinite, and that the god of Open Theism is really no god at all.

On Commentaries...

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
Helpful suggestions for pastors looking to spend limited money on commentaries with maximum value for their pastoral work.

When I left seminary, we had no money, so book purchases were mostly from used bookstores and resale shops. But I felt the need to have something "substantial" on at least one of the Gospels, so I took everyone's advice and spent about 40 of our limited dollars on I. Howard Marshall's commentary on Luke. "Stupendous example of evangelical scholarship at its very best" they all said, and I took the bait.

The Literal Interpretation of Scripture Can Be a Sign of Unbelief

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
Is it a sign of faith to interpret Scripture in the plainest, most obvious sense possible? Maybe, maybe not. Learn why true belief in the doctrine of Scripture sometimes calls us to look beyond the meanings at face value.

Do I believe the Bible is literally true?

Yes. A thousand times yes.

But to answer this question "yes" is not to say every text of Scripture is intended by the Holy Spirit to be interpreted literally. These are two different uses of the word 'literal' and the second use does not logically follow, and is not necessarily connected to, the first:

1. I believe the Bible is literally true.
2. I believe the Bible should always be interpreted literally.

How Many Children Should We Have?

Author:
Timothy B. Bayly
Description:
Pastors, elders, and older women are often asked for counsel concerning birth control and the place of fertility in the Christian home and marriage. Whether in premarital counseling, home visitation, or women's Bible studies, questions are raised concerning God's will in the timing and frequency of childbirth. Such questions are spiritual in nature and present church leaders with a wonderful opportunity to lead Christian husbands and wives into a deeper understanding of the Biblical meaning and purpose of womanhood, manhood, sex, and marriage.

Some time ago my wife, Mary Lee, and I had the pleasure of announcing that Mary Lee was "with child" for the fifth time. The little one then nestling in his mother's womb whom today we know as Taylor Isaiah Bayly was a wonderful gift from God and, along with our other four children, we are grateful to God for His good gift. When we announced this pregnancy, though, undoubtedly there were some who wondered, "Why another one? Aren't four enough? How many are you going to have?"
