Art and the Church
Fri, 2010-02-26 10:07 — David BakerHave you noticed the increasing prevalence of “Art Ministries” in the church? It seems that art is almost becoming a ministry we can expect to have —along with the coffee shop, of course. Since the beginning, there’s been a combustible relationship between the church and art. (I’m not sure about the church and coffee; surely our resident historians could enlighten me.) Art is powerful, and when it imposes itself on the church there’s always a point that leads to idolatry. There’s always a longing in the human heart to worship the created things rather than the creator...
That's a Bad Question
Tue, 2010-02-23 08:49 — Joseph BaylyRecently I was asked the following question on this blog: “Of the 15 people attending your group, how many had a completely non-church background before you arrived?”
The question looked to me like a passive aggressive challenge. I might have been wrong about the motivation behind the question, but regardless, the question itself is flawed.
I got a friend in Jesus
Mon, 2010-02-22 08:24 — Max CurellHow do we as American Christians understand the grace of God? For many, grace has become a cheap commodity whose value is indexed against the personality of whatever man is peddling it. Case in point: tuning in to an oldies station recently, I heard these words:
Never been a sinner I never sinned
Body Lessons
Thu, 2010-02-18 10:29 — Amanda EwerThis Christmas I found myself meditating on and being convicted by 1 Corinthians 12. I had done a rather remarkable job, I thought, of completing my work in such a way that I could enjoy our time away, relaxing with my feet up. All my gifts were purchased or made, wrapped, ribboned and tagged. As for food preparation, I had made dry mixes and put them in Ziploc bags with photocopies of my recipes, highlighting missing ingredients. I was oh-so-very-prepared. Upon arrival at our first stop on the 20th, I made inquiries to see if I could be of any help...
Depravity & Desire
Mon, 2010-02-15 13:57 — Lane Bowman“About this time began the great noise, in this part of the country, about Arminianism, which seemed to appear with a very threatening aspect upon the interest of religion here.”
The Centrality of the Atoning Blood of Christ
Fri, 2010-02-12 11:25 — David WegenerIn the late 1890s, a group emerged to coordinate the activities and witness of Christian groups in the British universities. In 1905 it took the name of the Student Christian Movement (SCM). Over time the SCM became broader theologically and focused on witnessing and bringing diverse groups together for evangelism. They embraced a critical approach to the study of the Bible, and even considered admitting those who denied the Trinity into their membership...
Raising Warrior Sons
Wed, 2010-02-10 17:58 — Heather UmmelWhat does it mean to be a warrior? A fierce killing machine? Or is it more akin to the scalping, silent horseman from Dances with Wolves? These are pictures that might come to mind when someone says the word “warrior,” but as Christians we’re talking about raising our sons to be warriors for Christ. Why warriors? Where did the idea come from?

Church Planting Update: ClearNote Church in Indy
Tue, 2010-02-09 08:50 — Joseph BaylyWhen we think of missions work, we often think of working in a far-off country like Peru or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In other words, we think of foreign missions. But if we define a missionary as someone fulfilling the great commission, sent to share the gospel with those who have not heard the good news of Christ’s salvation, we will remember that missions work is truly global. If you are reading this, you are, more than likely, somewhere on the globe, and if there are people around, you’ve almost certainly found a good place for missions work.
By the Word of His Power: Tolkien, words, and the life of faith
Mon, 2010-02-08 11:54 — Josh CongroveDo you believe words have power? Most likely you'd agree that they do, but now let me refine the question: Do you believe that words have real, objective power? Do you believe that they have power not just to change minds and hearts, but that sometimes they can exert objective power in the created world? If that seems a strange question, bear with me while I explain...
The Pleasure of Patriarchy (Pt. 2)
Thu, 2010-02-04 13:30 — Anne JonesThis series of blog posts, as the title indicates, is about how women of God can, should, and must enjoy the pleasures of patriarchy. Last time, I promised that “for the next several months, Lord willing, we will look at how patriarchy is a place of pleasure for God’s woman…
